Statutory Provision: Dioceses, Pastoral and Mission Measure 2007 S. 42
The mission and pastoral committee shall be under a duty, in respect of each church proposed to be closed or building closed for regular public worship (except where it is proposed to close a church and make provision for the future of the building under section 46) –
(a) in the case of a listed building or a building situated in a conservation area, to make every endeavour to find a suitable alternative use or suitable alternative uses for the building, and
(b) in the case of any other building, to develop proposals for the suitable alternative use or uses of the building or for the demolition of the building and the disposal of its site.
Diocesan Provision:
By Resolution on 8th March 2008 the Diocesan Synod provided that the Diocesan Pastoral and Mission Committee should delegate the above function to a Closed Churches Uses Committee consisting of:
a) a chairman to be appointed by the bishop;
b) a member to be appointed by the Diocesan Board of Finance;
c) a member to be appointed by the Diocesan Pastoral and Mission Committee;
d) a member to be appointed by the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches after consultation with the Church Buildings Council.
e) such other members not exceeding three as the bishop's council and standing committee of the diocese may appoint, at least one of whom shall be a member of the Diocesan Synod.
