HIV AIDS Support Group

Eileen Smith

Eileen Smith, Chair of the HIV/AIDS Support Group says:

"Answers to people’s questions about HIV/AIDS are available with the right information, which can increase awareness and dispel misconceptions of HIV/AIDS. We work with various partner organisations such as the Crescent in St Albans and the Lodge in Luton. We would be very glad to hear from you if you would like to get involved."

How much do you know about this virus? Would you like to know more?

What are the transmission routes? Is it safe to visit the dentist or have surgery?

What do I say or do if I know someone has HIV?

Our aim is to support people who are affected by the HIV/Aids virus in Herts. and Beds. and to inform and raise awareness of it in St. Albans Diocese.

In the late 1990’s HIV diagnosis in the UK was prevalent among the male homosexual community. Recently, there has been an increase within the wider UK population as well as among people from Sub Saharan African origins.

At the moment there is no cure for HIV or AIDS, but there are highly active treatments that most people with HIV can benefit from. The drugs reduce the level of HIV in the blood and delay the development of AIDS. Although most people benefit from these treatments, the drugs can have unpleasant side effects and may have to be taken every day.
