Councils of Faiths and inter faith groups
Luton Council of Faiths is a prominent example of a multi-faith group that is supported by the local authority. Smaller groups exist in Watford, Bedford, Welwyn/Hatfield, and Hemel Hempstead, and groups are springing up elsewhere, often at the behest of local authorities that are required to consult with faith communities.
Hitchin Sikh-Christian Forum is an example of a bi-lateral initiative, as are local chapters of the Council of Christians and Jews.
East of England Faiths Council brings together religious leaders from the East of England to provide input to regional strategy and issues and to act as a point of contact for regional governance and other public bodies.
The Inter Faith Network for the UK is the national multi-faith organisation that promotes good relations between religious communities.
Christians often take the lead in helping to establish councils of faiths and inter faith groups. Luton Council of Faiths has a diverse membership, but crucial support comes from Grassroots, a small but exceptionally committed group of Christians.
The Faith Woodlands project aims to promote mutual understanding through the common ground of the natural world. Everyone is welcome to discover the peace and pleasure of Maulden Woods. An area of this ancient woodland has been provided by the Forestry Commission as a permanent spiritual space, and the project has been supported by both Luton and Bedford Councils of Faiths.
