Bishop says businesses must be run with a conscience

There’s no room for cutting corners to make a profit, said the Bishop of St Albans today, on hearing of the guilty verdicts in the Buncefield oil depot case heard at St Albans Crown Court.

Speaking of the devastation such disasters cause to people and their communities he said

“My heart goes out to all those people for whom Buncefield has meant injury and shock”.

“Disasters such as Buncefield and the oil spill in the Mexican Gulf tell us that protecting lives and the caring for the environment are more important than short term profits”.

“Not only are the consequences tragic for the victims, but the Buncefield case will blight lives and careers for decades to come. Ironically profits that were meant to benefit the company and its shareholders are spent instead on lawsuits and compensation."

“A secure recovery from economic adversity for Britain is a matter of making tough choices but these must be morally right choices and not ones where the price is paid by those who have no voice and no choice.”
