Celebrating RE in St Albans Diocese

Eighty pupils from ten primary schools in Hertfordshire, supported by twenty older pupils from Townsend School, St Albans, spent a day of creative, imaginative and even argumentative learning in St Albans Cathedral onThursday, 10 March courtesy of St Albans Education Centre.
The day was part of Celebrating RE, a national festival drawing attention to the contribution that religious education makes to children’s and young peoples’ lives and learning, taking place during March 2011. It also aims to raise public awareness of RE’s distinctive and positive contribution to society and to social cohesion and as a subject which relevant, challenging, interesting and of educational value to all, whatever their religious or philosophical background.
Lat Blaylock from the organisation RE Today led the sessions, during which children took part in various exercises with a focus on religious commitments, beliefs and self expression. Some of their work involved producing a logo that they best felt expressed what RE was about, what they wanted the community in St Albans to be like in 30 years’ time, how people influence the world and how individuals could make a difference.
Jane Chipperton, the Diocese of St Albans RE Adviser, said: “Celebrating RE made it possible for children to deepen their understanding of themselves and others through a special occasion which few will forget. In a world in which diversity is increasingly obvious, with the possibilities of both unity and fragmentation, the significance of good religious education should not be underestimated. It offers children and young people vital and challenging opportunities not only to clarify their own beliefs, behaviours and values but also to understand those of others – even if they disagree with them.”
