2009 - Year of the Child
Thirty years ago, UNESCO, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, declared 1979 “The Year of the Child,” as a means of drawing attention to the problems facing children across the world, including malnutrition and lack of access to education. Thirty years on, with many children still facing various unmet needs, some children’s work advisers around the country have taken the opportunity to make 2009 a year in which the issues, injustices and challenges facing young people today can be highlighted.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the work going on with children and young people as well as to get new work off the ground. The year can be a part of promoting lasting change and growth.
Our children’s work advisers are asking parishes “What will you do in your Church in 2009 to celebrate Children? Here are just a few ideas. Choose one—and let’s get events for children all across the Diocese, to celebrate Children in the Church.”
