Information about the grants available
The Council for Discipleship and Minsitry, through the Ministry Development Office, wishes to encourage your ongoing learning and professional development in order to help grow the church by offering a number of training allowances and grants:
Personal Training Allowance: All clergy who hold the Bishop’s licence, sector ministers, and Bishop’s Officers can claim up to £120 a year towards the cost of one or more approved events or courses for training. There is a form on which to apply for this allowance. The Ministry Development Office will happily advise on whether a particular course or event is eligible for a grant; in general, anything which contributes to one’s professional development will attract a grant. Clergy are encouraged to use the assisted self-appraisal scheme and/or triennial Episcopal reviews as opportunities to identify training needs. PCCs are strongly encouraged to match a diocesan grant, but a diocesan grant is not conditional on such matching funding. Grants must be claimed by 1st December. The personal training allowance may be “rolled over” for up to three years, creating a balance of up to £300 in 2012 and £320 in 2013, etc. It is, however, impossible to accumulate a balance of more than three years of PTA. You may roll over the remainder of a part-spent allowance. You need to request for any personal training allowance to be rolled over to the following year before 31st December.
Reading Grant: In addition to the personal training allowance, licensed clergy may claim an annual reading grant of £40 towards the cost of appropriate books of recent biblical and theological scholarship and/or journal subscriptions. Liturgical resources, Bibles and the Church Times are not generally considered appropriate for this grant. A completed form should be sent, preferably with a receipt, to the Ministry Development Office. Grants must be claimed by 1st December.
Postgraduate and Accredited Learning bursaries: Those undertaking formal courses of study at postgraduate, BA or diploma level may apply for a bursary up to £650 a year. Before embarking on such a formal study programme, please contact the Ministry Development Officer to discuss your plans.
Sabbaticals: Stipendiary clergy who have been in ministry for ten years and also have been in their present post for three years may be eligible for a sabbatical. Grants up to £1,000 are available. Sabbatical plans need to be discussed in advance with the Ministry Development Officer. Guidelines are available from the office to assist you in your planning.
Readers, Licensed-Lay Ministers, Retired Clergy, and those in recognised lay ministry (local ministry teams, youth workers, etc.) may apply for one-third of the total cost of a course or training event on a first-come first-served basis. Forms are available from the Ministry Development Office. Readers also should continue to apply to the In-Service Training Fund for grants, as they do at present.
Travel Bursary: Anyone who is attending a course or conference overseas may apply to the Ministry Development Office for a bursary. These will typically pay 50% of the travel costs up to a maximum grant of £200 and are distributed on a first-come first-served basis.
