Revd Martin King

Diocesan Environment Officer, Diocese of St Albans

8 January 2008

The Diocese of St Albans has appointed Revd Martin King as its Diocesan Environment Officer.

Martin has been a non-stipendiary minister at St Helen’s and St Peter’s in Wheathampstead since his ordination in 2005.  Martin came to ordained ministry after a career as a business professional with IBM, primarily working with IBM’s customers and clients, often in a consultancy role.  During his career he spent three years as an instructor at IBM’s European Education Centre in Brussels. Before joining IBM, Martin spent three years as a commissioned officer in the Royal Signals.

Martin has long had an active interest in environmental issues and his scientific background has helped him to assess the significance of many of the contributions to the lively environmental debate that is going on around us.  Martin has taken a particular interest in the energy efficiency of the houses in which he has lived and the fuel efficiency of the cars he has owned.  His household is also pro-active in recycling as much as possible.

As DEO, Martin is expecting to be able to combine his scientific knowledge and his interest in practical environmental issues with an understanding of the theology of caring for the world that God has given us.  He will be supporting parishes and deaneries, which wish to strengthen their own environmental understanding and practice.  In this he will work closely with the Diocese’s Environment Group, which brings together professional expertise in a number of key areas, and is chaired by Dr Richard Southern, Head of the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire.  In addition, Martin will represent the Diocese at national meetings of DEO’s and link the Diocese into national church initiatives, such as the Shrinking the Footprint campaign.

Martin welcomes contact on environmental matters via email on martin.king@stalbans.anglican.org or by phone on 07963 196416.
