A recent publication of the Crescent Group in St Albans, Ubuntu-Hunhu in Hertfordshire, shows an increase in the numbers of Black African HIV/Aids Suffers in the region.
It is a fact that there are currently 40 million people worldwide affected by the HIV virus, the majority of who live in Sub-Saharan Africa; however, the situation is often nearer to us than we think, with 97% of current HIV/Aids sufferers in Luton being Black African. The statistics also show that twice as many women than men are affected. There is therefore a growing need to provide medical information and treatment in our Diocese. There is a further need to offer emotional support and to raise the level of awareness within the church and community of the problems experienced by those affected.
Following a request to the Diocese, a consultation attended by representatives from the Mothers Union and the Board for Church for Church and Society was organised in order to explore the reality of the situation.
.Representatives of two HIV support organisations located in the Diocese were invited to present an overview of the work they do and the challenges they face in trying to provide a comprehensive and caring service to clients affected by HIV/AIDS.
Michelle Little from the Crescent, a government and Social Services funded drop in centre for HIV suffers in Hertfordshire and Hailey Lynch, who represented The Lodge, an NHS facility, part of the Luton and Dunstable Hospital gynaecological unit, both spoke of the social deprivation experienced by a significant number of their clients. The issues ranged from poverty to mental health, immigration and stigma.
Both groups called on the Diocese to support the work of the charities through education on sexual health issues, providing befrienders to clients, and supporting them spiritually as well as socially.
HIV/AIDS is a problem that can affect anyone; education and awareness are very essential in countering it. The Church is once again being called to be a help to the helpless.
