Many dioceses in the Church of England now have diocesan race equality policies and in June 2005 the St. Albans Diocesan Synod approved the adoption of our own Race Equality Policy. A copy of this policy has now been distributed to every parish in the diocese and it is hoped that every PCC will carefully consider adopting the policy. It is also available in PDF format here.
The rich and wonderful diversity of God’s people reminds us that we are all his children and that he loves us equally and asks nothing more than that we love and respect each other.
Even those of us who live in communities which are predominantly white British need to consider that we are all part of a larger diocesan community which includes people from a huge range of ethnic backgrounds.
The Revd. Pam Wise, Chair of the Race Equality Committee, said, “By adopting the policy parishes will demonstrate that they as a church - and we as a diocese - are committed to ensuring that all people stand before God, equally, as his children. We will be declaring that any form of racism is completely unacceptable amongst God’s children.”
A Race Equality Committee has been set up to offer advice and guidance to the diocese and to parishes on issues relating to the policy and to encourage greater awareness of race equality issues.
