Cathedral’s Acting Dean to be next Dean of Sheffield
29th June 2021
The Revd Canon Abigail Thompson – is to be the next Dean of Sheffield Cathedral. She will leave St Albans Cathedral in time to take up her new role, expected to be during October 2021.
Abi, as she is known, took up the post of Sub-Dean of St Albans Cathedral in 2018 and is currently Acting Dean.
Speaking about her departure, she said:
“Three and a half years is not long to spend at a magnificent place like St Albans Cathedral, but it is long enough to know how much I will miss it. Here I have prayed and worked alongside a devoted congregation, an enormous team of dedicated volunteers, wonderful colleagues and I have made many friends. God is now calling me to a new adventure in Sheffield and I take my experiences and learning from here as I return to the north. Most especially, I shall never forget journeying through these difficult months of pandemic with such amazing people committed to keeping prayer and worship alive here and I will pray for the continued thriving of this holy place.”
She was ordained deacon in Sheffield Cathedral in 2006 and was also married there in 2010.
Dr Alan Smith, Bishop of St Albans said:
“Abi Thompson has been a superb Sub Dean of St Albans Cathedral over the past three years and we are sad to see her return to the north. Her shining faith, warm friendship and infectious humour has endeared her to many people here in the Cathedral and in the diocese. She goes with our love and prayers.”
Abi graduated in Music at Kings College London and in Theology at Westcott House Cambridge. Abi holds both ABRSM Grade 8 Piano and ABRSM Grade 8 Singing and before ordination was a youth worker and freelance professional singer.
