The Safety of Children and Vulnerable Adults in Diocese of St Alban: a statement following the publication of the report on the Diocese of Chichester, August 2012.

?

The Diocese of St Albans operates procedures for the care of children and vulnerable adults. These procedures are overseen by a Board of Management including senior and experienced people who are familiar with this area of work from a variety of national organisations within and outside the church. This ensures that we are able to measure what we do against best practice across the country.

?

We are aware that we have a very high standard to meet in the care of children in fulfilling Christ’s command to ‘Let all the children come to me.’ We believe that we are doing as much as is possible to make our churches safe for children and vulnerable adults.

?

We seek to ensure the safest possible environment for those in our churches:

?

– We have robust recruitment procedures for clergy and anyone involved in activities where they come into contact with children and vulnerable adults.

?

– Any concerns raised about protection and safeguarding are taken seriously and are dealt with immediately. The Police and Social Services are always notified in such cases.

?

– There is widespread communication of policies and procedures across the diocese.

?

– We offer training for parishes in child protection and safeguarding vulnerable adults. We monitor our work constantly and are committed to keeping up to date with changes in legislation and best practice.

?

We already have in place processes which meet all the current requirements for protecting children and safeguarding vulnerable adults. However, we will examine the recently published report on the Diocese of Chichester immediately to see if our processes and procedures can be improved in any way.
