Divestment Cycle Ride comes to St Albans

On Wednesday 21st September Chris Hull, Christian Aid manager for Norwich and James Green, an Anglican lay minister and Eco Church co-ordinator, visited St Albans to present a letter from the South African bishops to Bishop Alan.  The letter encourages dioceses to divest from fossil fuels.

James explained that since COP 26 he had been nurturing the idea of a cycle ride to some of the Church of England dioceses to highlight the issue of fossil fuel divestment.  He and Chris have cycled from Norwich, which celebrated divestment in November, to St Edmundsbury then on to Chelmsford. They have subsequently ridden to various other dioceses around the country.  James said that the idea of the cycle pilgrimage was to be celebratory and encouraging, not to criticise.

The letter from the Southern African Bishops asks for divestment in view of the devastation being caused to their communities by fossil fuel exploration. James said that he and Chris were offering this as a positive exercise, and that they honour the inspiring work that was already happening. The event was planned in collaboration with Operation Noah, and there is a chance for those who wish to support them.
