Webinar Wednesday Series: Rural Ministries (RNP)
18th September @ 1:45 pm - 3:15 pm
England is one of the most urban and industrialised countries in the world, which can make it difficult to talk about a specific rural culture, and yet nearly 18% of the population live in what might be defined as a rural area. Central government and mainline denominational policymakers often view the countryside as a place of beauty and peace; where not much happens and few resources are needed, and yet beneath the surface, the countryside is a complex with many hidden needs; a place where one size does not fit all. How do we as Christians begin to address both the opportunities and challenges that rural life brings? What are the implications for the shape of church and approach to mission for those worshipping and witnessing in a rural context? Rev Simon Mattholie, CEO of Rural Ministries since 2011 and part of the leadership team of Rural Fresh Expressions, will help us identify some of the key characteristics of the countryside, share some encouraging stories from around the country of those who are trying some different approaches and suggests some ways in which church could be re-shaped and re-understood to offer a significant missional impact across the UK.
Simon Mattholie is an ordained baptist minister, who is the current CEO of Rural Ministries, an ecumenical mission agency that works across the UK. With a wealth of experience over the last 20 years, Simon has played a key part in assisting many diocese across the UK in their rural strategy and helping them to secure funding to support this. Simon lives on a small farm in Suffolk with his wife Kirstie and a menagerie of animals. He has two grown up children, and is also a grandfather.
As part of the Reaching New People project, we are hosting a series of webinars around presenting topics relevant for new forms of church. These will be “presentation based” discussions enabling learning from others experiences and expertise. The topics covered will major on the specific practical, theological and ecclesiological aspects required when creating new Christian communities. This is an opportunity to share your own learning, whilst learning from others.
Anyone who is interested in the topic. We really want to hear your voice, and encourage you to add to a growing body of knowledge on the topic. We are especially looking for practitioners (lay or ordained leaders of parishes and fresh expressions in all contexts and across all traditions) that can approach the topic with a beginner’s mind-set and empathy for other people’s views.
All our webinars will be online and accessed via the Zoom platform. This means you can join from anywhere and relax over a cup of tea as you listen, share and gain missional imagination into the particular topic.
You will receive a link after registering via Eventbrite. Each webinar will have an animator with practitioner knowledge on the topic presented. The discussion will last ninety minutes and involve structured dialogue. We will also be recording the event as we build a bank of learning for practitioners to access in the Reaching New People project.
If you are booking on behalf of another person, could you please complete the order form using their details rather than your own. Thank you.
