Webinar Wednesday Series: Social Activism: The Call to Mission (RNP)

9th October @ 1:45 pm - 3:15 pm

Reaching New People

Rev’d Dr Ash Barker is a pioneering urban activist, leadership developer, writer and Minister. A husband to a force of nature and Dad to 2 amazing kids, Ash spent over 25 years immersed and ministering in urban poverty contexts in his native Melbourne and Bangkok’s largest slum.

Ash founded and leads Newbigin School for Urban Leadership ( which partners with NTC for formal studies (MA, PhD supervision) as well as emerging leaders programmes like to mobilise, prepare and equip Christians leaders for our new urban world.

Embedding themselves among the people they are serving has always been a significant aspect of the Barkers’ approach to mission. ‘Programmes are not going to be enough; institutions are not enough,’ Ash says. ‘It takes people to reach people, and communities to reach communities. We feel like the gospel flows better relationally than it does just through a programme.’

This webinar will reflect on the call to mission, the challenges of contextualising the gospel within any context and will help you to:

  • Be compelled to ask yourself those risky questions about what really matters in life.

  • Step out of your own comfort zone: Begin to travel further on your own risky journey.

  • See how suffering can help you take the risks of gaining insight.

  • Learn how to join with God’s risky compassion.

  • Begin crossing over to connect: Finding solidarity with those on the margins in ways that changes life perspectives and values.

  • Find strategies that can work for you to help others and find your own vocation at the same time.

Webinar Wednesdays

As part of the Reaching New People project, we are hosting a series of webinars around presenting topics relevant for new forms of church. These will be “presentation based” discussions enabling learning from others experiences and expertise. The topics covered will major on the specific practical, theological and ecclesiological aspects required when creating new Christian communities. This is an opportunity to share your own learning, whilst learning from others.

Anyone who is interested in the topic. We really want to hear your voice, and encourage you to add to a growing body of knowledge on the topic. We are especially looking for practitioners (lay or ordained leaders of parishes and fresh expressions in all contexts and across all traditions) that can approach the topic with a beginner’s mind-set and empathy for other people’s views.

All our webinars will be online and accessed via the Zoom platform. This means you can join from anywhere and relax over a cup of tea as you listen, share and gain missional imagination into the particular topic.

You will receive a link after registering via Eventbrite. Each webinar will have an animator with practitioner knowledge on the topic presented. The discussion will last ninety minutes and involve structured dialogue. We will also be recording the event as we build a bank of learning for practitioners to access in the Reaching New People project.

If you are booking on behalf of another person, could you please complete the order form using their details rather than your own. Thank you.
