Our Looking

What progress have you made with the Goals from your previous MAP, and what do you want to celebrate?

  • 1. Stewardship. We have raised awareness within our congregation of the financial aspect of running St James. A display showing the very wide range of costs in keeping St James running was in church for several weeks. The display included both large and small costs such as cleaning materials, candles, giving envelopes to heating and lighting. Members of the congregation have been encouraged to “sponsor” different things such as organist fees, giving envelopes.
  • Peace Garden. Initial stages of ground clearing, laying of path and initial planting have been completed.
  • Quiet Centre. Refurbishment of the hall, meeting room, kitchen and toilets is well under way.

What Goals did you set where you saw less progress than you would have liked?

  • Links with parents/Godparents. A course was adapted by Revd Carole Selby and Baptism Visitor, but attendance was low as it was difficult to get a time that suited everyone. Those that did attend give positive feedback.

Things seen about our local community

  • Loneliness within the community not just of the elderly, the need for a greater awareness of the various residents experiencing loneliness.
  • Many electronically controlled gated premises/estates, which detract from a sense of a unified community.
  • Goffs Oak is an area that is going to undergo great development in the near future.

How have you begun to engage with these concerns / needs / issues?

  • We have started to look at how we can support the members of our congregation experiencing loneliness through lifts to church and events, visits and the continuation of our monthly Supper Club. We are looking at starting a Pastoral group to look into this in greater detail.
  • We need to advertise our services and social events more to local residents.
  • We have started to look at how we need to develop in order to engage with the community and make new disciples

Our Discerning

Vision (for five years' time)

To be a welcoming, outward looking and spiritually vibrant church with an inclusive mix of people of all ages committed to offering a beacon of love and hope to the local community

Current Situation

From our Parish Statistics for Mission, we see that we are / have...

We have grown in number, we have regular services that have a steady number attending. We have many baptisms during the year and we have good, regular attendance at our Family Praise service which attracts many families.

Priorities (for the next five years)

  • To share the good news widely but most especially with younger families, children and young people
  • To develop a range of opportunities for spiritual nurture and refreshment to enhance a greater sense of well-being.
  • To work with other local organisations to support those in need.

Goals (for the next year)

  • Offer more opportunities for prayerful healing and reconciliation, to foster a greater sense of personal and community well-being.
  • Promoting awareness of good stewardship of time, talents and money in everyday life.
  • Continued development of spiritual nurture by - - offering local schools a ‘schools Experience’ event during the year, - offering members of the congregation a variety of courses / study groups
  • Enhance lines of communication to improve outreach links and better marketing of meeting spaces available for hire.
