Our Looking

What progress have you made with the Goals from your previous MAP, and what do you want to celebrate?

  • We have 3 more home groups and we held successful church weekends away and at home
  • We have installed a new sound system
  • We have grown in hospitality with more people staying for better coffee and so our fellowship has deepened

What Goals did you set where you saw less progress than you would have liked?

  • Our fresh expression 'church:reloaded' has struggled to make any lasting impact - we need to improve the quality of Bible teaching and make it more accessible for older children as well so they don't get bored.
  • We made less progress that hoped with our building development - partly because we hadn't thought things through well enough

Things seen about our local community

  • We have a huge parish, but large areas remain unaffected by us.
  • We have many occasional offices, but little fruit from them.
  • There is a hunger for spirituality, but a lack of knowledge and understanding of the gospel.

How have you begun to engage with these concerns / needs / issues?

  • We have begun delivering our Grapevine magazines to specific areas of the parish on a 3 monthly basis to try and build relationships. We have also been partners in 'Love Stevenage' and run events on the St Nicholas estate for the last 2 summers.
  • We have changed our baptism policy to ask parents to come to church for 3 months before attending the prep course. This seems to have reduced the number of baptisms but we now have stronger relationships with those who attend the courses and they are engaging more with the material and the Christian faith.
  • We have planned to focus on discipleship in our next MAP to equip God's people to take God's gospel into God's world so they are able to answer some of these frequent questions

Our Discerning

Vision (for five years' time)

We aspire to be a church which is firmly grounded in the Bible (where the Bible is taught faithfully, clearly and passionately), growing in number (committed to evangelism), greater in likeness to Jesus (better disciples of Jesus), glued together as a loving community (where all are loved and cared for) and that glorifies God in everything we do (doing the best we can in everything).

Current Situation

From our Parish Statistics for Mission, we see that we are / have...

are growing steadily - especially at our main morning service.

Priorities (for the next five years)

  • Through preaching, Bible study groups, prayer and services to grow more in the likeness of Jesus.
  • Having a clear focus on making disciples.
  • Growing new leaders to facilitate growth and develop existing and new ministries.

Goals (for the next year)

  • To run courses on reading the Bible 1-2-1 and on your own and to train people in sharing their faith
  • To organise a church weekend away for the autumn of 2018
  • To run an 'exploring Christianity' course three times each year.
  • To reorder our buildings to make the floor safe, improve lighting, give us a larger usable and more flexible worship space and provide rooms for children and youth work on Sundays
  • To run a mini-mission in 2018 to build on growing links and contact with the St Nicholas estate
