Our Looking

Things seen about our local community

  • Our village is a strong community, though some key people have recently moved away.
  • Local people's interest in the church is increasingly focussed upon its building, not its faith.
  • Our society has moved significantly away from the Christian foundation from which it has benefited.

Three things we have seen about our church

  • Numbers are declining as a result of age and infirmity. Money is tight although we have reserves.
  • We are not engaging well with others (eg. families).
  • Members engage in many community activities, but our witness to the gospel is somewhat limited.

Our Discerning

Vision (for five years' time)

Our Mission Statement, 'Knowing Christ and Making Him Known' continues to shape our planning and praxis. Part of our hope is to be known as a community which serves its neighbours well. In 'Our Looking' this year we have identified that to do this we must become much better informed about the needs of non-churchgoing villagers and their views about the church and the Christian faith. Our MAP therefore starts with a resolve to continue that investigation and sets limited and short-term plans until this has been done.

Priorities (for the next five years)

  • To acquire a fuller, more detailed picture of our place in the community and its needs, so we can serve our neighbours better.
  • To maintain a Christian witness in a village where other service providers are under threat or gone.
  • To engage a better understanding of stewardship within the church and improve financial stability.

Goals (for the next year)

  • To make the best opportunity to hold a special service for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
  • To write an improved entry introducing the Church in the village's Welcome Pack.
  • To consider how we can make more of special services which attract a broader congregation and families.
  • To help the 'Friends of Widford Church' charity to revive its activities.
  • To set a clear 5 year vision for the church.
