Partition History Project
– a report from The Revd Michael Roden, Hitchin
Grants have been awarded to Hitchin Parish in support of their strategic reconciliation work, in staging a moving play on the Partition for children called, ‘Child of the Divide‘ (by Sudha Bhuchar). The grants enable the roll-out of this play and associated educational materials on a national tour in autumn 2017.
Child of the Divide:
A wonderful and mature play that uses the story of one child to explore the tragedy of many thousands…it’s a rare show with equal appeal to kids and adults, heart and head”
(Lyn Gardner, Guardian)
Movingly, Michael reports, they have received an invitation to take the play on tour, in November this year, to both sides of the border – to The Government University of Lahore Pakistan and to the brand new Museum of the Partition in Amritsar India. There is some uncertainty at present over whether this will happen.
In recent years, there has been some dialogue with the BBC and an early conversation was a catalyst for commissioning a tv series on the Partition, one episode of which was shown in August this year, called ‘You saved my Dad’s life‘.
