It’s Plastic Fantastic in Church!
20th May 2019
Plastic credit or debit cards have been around a VERY long time; so much so we don’t think twice before tapping our card, smart phone or smart watch and moving on. Contactless payments have made these devices more usable than ever and 2017 was the first year that saw more plastic payments than cash payments in this country. And now some churches have the technology to finally allow generous givers to make donations in this way.
Small hand held devices that link to a phone or tablet (with data connectivity – 4G or Wi-Fi) cost as little as £20 to purchase and the company who processes the transactions take a small percentage of each donation to cover their costs. Larger devices are also available that don’t need connectivity or that don’t need staffing, but they do cost more.
There’s a handy list of products on offer on the Parish Buying website and a very useful factsheet on gift aid etc on the Parish Resources website. Do contact the Flourishing Churches team for more information or to be put in touch with a church near you that has gone down this route and can offer their wisdom, by e-mail or on 01727 818153
So far all research shows that plastic payments do not reduce the cash/cheque/ planned giving donations the church receives – but without fuss and hassle allows givers to give when they have no cash in their pocket. One church recently said they have received £900 on their card reader that they wouldn’t have got otherwise – all this in 5 months! And they can take payments for fees, tickets for events etc. It really is plastic fantastic for our churches!
For more information we are holding a Growing Generous Giving workshop day on 3rd July – please call Kate for more information or book here: The first 30 parishes signed up will receive a free sum-up card reader for use in their parish. Do book quickly!
