The Archdeacon of Bedford’s Walking Pilgrimage of Bedfordshire

Click here to hear Archdeacon Dave talking to Mike Naylor on BBC Three Counties about what an Archdeacon does and what he has learnt from his recent walking pilgrimage of Bedfordshire. An excellent interview, well worth a listen!

The new Archdeacon of Bedford, the Ven Dave Middlebrook led a walking pilgrimage of the six deaneries in Bedforshire over the summer, with the aim of visiting as many of the churches as possible.  Each day started and finished with a short act of worship, and he led prayers at each church.

During the 13-day pilgrimage Archdeacon Dave visited 159 places of worship, and walked 266 miles (in over 584,000 steps!).  He says “As I have walked and prayed round the beautiful Bedfordshire countryside and our incredibly diverse towns, with a rich history of churches from across the traditions, in every church I have encountered dedicated, prayerful, committed people. Many people dedicate themselves to caring for the churches they are involved with, and many desire many more to come to understand and believe the Christian faith. It has been a deeply enriching and humbling experience, and has given me great hope for the church in our archdeaconry and diocese”.

Maggie (the dog) accompanied Archdeacon Dave through the first four deaneries, (though she isn’t actually Dave’s dog, he was dog-sitting for his brother!).  Maggie said of the pilgrimage, “Thank you to all the people who made a fuss of me, gave me a drink of water, and fed me biscuits, which of course it would have been most rude to refuse (although Dave was a little concerned). I loved being the centre of attention, as well as running and bouncing through cornfields”.
