Parish of Great Berkhamsted
« Mission Action Plan »
~ Growth and consistency of numbers for our Sunday Club ministry to young people during our main Sunday service.
~ The consolidation of community outreach through our liaison with charities including the local ‘People Not Borders’ organisation.
~ The establishment of a suitable response to the town’s annual ‘Festival of Light’ (the switching-on of the town’s Christmas lights). In contrast to the noise and commercialism of the High Street, we create a serene space in the church lit by thousands of candles to which hundreds come to amble and reflect.
Whilst our ministry to our two church schools is warm and positive and we have good relations with our non-church local infant and nursery school (Swing Gate), we have not established a regular chaplaincy to Ashlyns Upper School in Berkhamsted – something which was a goal in our last MAP of 2012.
In five years time we hope to be a growing, inclusive and welcoming church at the heart of our local community, helping people through encounter, prayer and learning to find a space for God in their busy lives. Due to our outward-looking nature, we care for all aspects of our community and its needs, and are generous to those in the wider world, particularly to those who find themselves marginalised in our society.
To provide and promote a variety of new, different and welcoming ways for people of all backgrounds, ages and experiences to connect with God and St Peter’s, whilst, at the core, maintaining our strong, dignified and dynamic sacramental heritage.
To explore with a new incumbent new ways in which St Peter’s might reach out to the local community without diluting our heritage.
To continue to develop our provision for children and young families, and maintain our strong connection with schools within the parish.
Through feedback, reflection and visible evidence, to ensure we continue to build upon the recent increase in young families and children attending St Peter’s principal service by providing for their needs.
With the help of our new director of schools’ ministry (Fr Joe Roberts, Team Vicar at Potten End), to continue to build upon the good relationships we have with our local schools so as to continue to break down any perceived barriers people might have which might prevent them from being part of the St Peter’s community.
Continue to develop our engagement with the needs, aspirations, and concerns of our wider community to ensure that St Peter’s remains at the heart of Berkhamsted life beyond our church’s walls, and a place to which people can easily turn.
Through feedback, reflection and visible evidence, to ensure we continue to build bridges with the local community through the reintroduction in 2018 of the Petertide Fair, through continued development of Oktoberfest and the annual Christmas ‘Festival of Light’, and to promote our annual local and international charitable causes.
Through feedback, reflection and increased interaction, to ensure we continue to improve our communication system through not only older methods of advertising but by using new digital opportunities to the full, so that our wider community is increasingly aware of and engaged by an attractive, dynamic and Christ-focused family with whom it is increasingly connecting.
