Progress

What progress are you celebrating since your previous MAP?

1. Our new initiative: Live@5. Activities for children and parents, involving a meal, music, crafts and worship. This is run by Tom and parents and is thriving on Fridays after school during term time.
2. Coffee mornings are held once a month on Fridays and on a 5th Friday, for the group of walkers and others who drop in from other villages for a coffee, tea and homemade cakes as well as a second-hand book sale.
3. Bringing variety to our monthly Family service with a nave altar, special music and less formality has been welcomed by most.
4. Opening up our church every day- appreciated by visitors, who write comments in our book and light candles on the pricket.
5. Taize service bi-monthly.

How far did you meet your previous priorities?
(1 star = Not at all → 10 stars = Done)

5 stars

Where has there been less progress than hoped for?

1. `Rise and Shine`: offered to children in the Christina room during the regular Eucharist at 9.30, led by an enthusiastic team of 4 adults using carefully prepared and themed activities. Numbers were good at the start but attendance is now unpredictable, for a variety of reasons.
2. Attendance at the Family Service by parents with children, despite their apparent enjoyment of it, is irregular. Discussion with them has not revealed any specific dissatisfaction or clues as to how we can attract them to come each first Sunday of the month.

Vision

What is the vision for your Church, Parish, Team Ministry or Benefice?

To make St. John’s stand out as the Parish church, visible, accessible and significant in the village

The geographic separation of St John’s from the village by the bypass means our building is not visible from the village. Access on foot is awkward because it has to be via the underpass, although we have a good car park accessed from Luton Road.

Values

What are the core values for your Church, Parish, Team Ministry or Benefice?

1. Prayer: central to our Faith, our thinking and our actions. We work with love and fellowship to welcome others, hoping to inspire trust and to offer support.
2. Listening: we seek to listen to the wider community in order to discern their needs. We have active discussions regularly on how to be flexible and to develop new ways of attracting people to St John’s.
3. Flexibility: the foundation of our worship is traditional, though we are not fixed in our thinking about liturgy or time. We aim to make our services spiritual, without being pompous.

1st Priority

What is your 1st Priority to make your vision a reality?

Re-ordering our building. We plan to make a more flexible and welcoming space inside the building by removing the pews, improving the kitchen by providing separate access to the toilet and a hatch for serving drinks and food. The heating system will be changed and a new floor installed. Our hope is that more people will regard St John’s as the social hub of the village and consider it a venue of choice.
