Parish of North Mymms
« Mission Action Plan »
Our previous MAP was submitted in 2012, so we have been looking at what has happened since then. There has been a change of church leaders, with an 18 month vacancy during which the existing service pattern was upheld with no breaks. Ruth joined as Team Vicar in Sept 2019 and Penny as Assoc Vicar in Sept 2020.
We are also working through the effects of the Pandemic and how that has changed church life. We have gone to on-line services using Zoom for a weekly Service of the Word, which has also been an opportunity to have more informal style of services, with more people willing to speak and take part. We have used This Time Tomorrow as an opportunity to get to know what challenges people are facing in the week ahead & then prayed for them on screen. We have a “What am I thankful for” time, to allow people to celebrate the small things that they have been blessed with. We have highlighted various things for which we needed to raise specific sums of money and the congregation have been very generous and funded (for example) the new cameras which we have installed, which allow us to now live-stream in-church services, Weddings and Funerals. We have been looking at our Parish room and how that can be improved to make it more accessible for the community and church family, and are in the middle of adding new fitted furniture with storage below & seating above, ready for our new toddler group and bereavement cafe we plan on starting later this year. We continued to worship God during the recent pandemic introducing on-line services for Sunday. This required the purchase of equipment, training and gathering skills for members of the congregation to achieve this. We replaced our social events with on-line activities to help nurture those isolated during the pandemic. We held well attended Advent and Lent on-line courses. Our Electoral Roll numbers remain stable. We were able to build on our relationship with our church school regularly leading worship and teaching. We held two new popular community events: Easter Egg Hunt and Teddy Bear Picnic. We recognized the usefulness of the railings outside our church building and have used them for several displays, whereby we have engaged with our church school and local community
The impact of the local lockdown. The congregation are mostly elderly and although very willing and able, have some reservation about setting up new initiatives at this current time.
There are very few children in the church congregation although this is an area of mission that we have identified as needing development.
We are an outward looking and welcoming church, catering for all age groups and helping the local communities to experience God’s love and grow in faith.
Meeting the needs of our community through our welcome, through sharing God’s good news, and showing the hope and compassion of knowing Jesus.
Establishing a MAP team that prays and meets regularly (3 weekly) to discuss, discern and implement the vision for St Mary’s.
We aim to then have teams for each of the 3 priorities to discuss & implement strategies and plan forward.
S=Specific and precise objective. To assemble the team, a cross section of the congregation with age & ideas. The team will meet every 3 weeks via Zoom.
M= Measurable. Meetings will be minuted. The objective has been reached when each of the 3 priorities has a team to implement the vision.
A= Achievable. A large & varied team has already been established and is working through the priorities.
R= Realistic. By creating three teams, hopefully we will be able to share the load and recruit more people to join us as they catch the vision. Some of the priorities will benefit from community grants, so those teams will source funding from appropriate agencies.
T= Time Bound. At this point we have not put dates in place for all our priorities but aim to have all 3 teams in place by December 2021.
Oasis North Mymms Caring Café, aimed at those who are bereaved/lonely.
S= Specific and precise objective. Oasis Team of 6 people have met to plan. It will run monthly (initially) in St Michael’s room – our Parish room. The PCC fully back this & have agreed to fund consumables and the use of the room. We are liaising with local funeral directors to cross advertise this venture.
M = Measurable. When we serve the first cup of coffee, and have the first conversation.
A= Achievable. This café is achievable, as funding is agreed, advertising is in place & the need is there.
R= Realistic. We are planning on this provision being monthly, we already have enough people ready to run this and who are excited about this priority.
T= Time-Bound. Starting in September 2021, on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 2-4pm. The Oasis team will review this every 3 months and report progress to the PCC.
To establish a worshipping community that encourages people to use the outside space around the church building, and will be welcoming for all ages & abilities.
S= Specific and precise objective. We will put together a lay-led & clergy supported team to run Wild Worship sessions, and will pinpoint the best day of the week and time to host this, and hold this every 3 months. The PCC fully back this new initiative & will be informed of progress at each PCC meeting. We recognise that we will need some capital investment in this project, to purchase items such as all-weather jumpsuits, gazebos, fire-pit safety equipment.
M = Measurable. At the post-meeting review, at least 1 new person has attended this new way of worshipping.
A = Achievable – we already have the outdoor space and fire pit ready to use. Our existing congregation are starting to recognise that Sunday mornings are not an ideal time for all ages to attend an act of worship, so therefore we need to offer an alternative time and setting for worship to take place.
R = Realistic – There has been interest from the congregation. 9 members of the congregation attended Zoom Diocesan training to learn about Outdoor Church, with 5 others there by invitation who will possibly involved when we start holding sessions.
T = Time bound. The Wild team will meet in mid September to plan our first Wild Worship, which we hope will take place in October 2021.
