Progress

What progress are you celebrating since your previous MAP?

Pre March 2020 we were a growing congregation with a thriving Sunday Family Service including Sunday school once a month and a growing choir and attendance across all ages.

However, we have faced significant challenges in the last year in being able to make progress on our previous MAP actions in the light of the Covid Pandemic. Since our last MAP we successfully achieved a National Lottery Heritage Bid which means that we have been able to make vital repairs to the church which were much needed. However, this means that St Leonard’s has been closed since March 2020 for refurbishment and we have been in a vacancy since Dec 2020. Not being able to meet together for much of 2020/2021, and being restricted once we have been able to do so has also meant that our focus on Mission has been diverted and so it has been a case of trying to make small marginal gains where we can.

Progress in 2020 includes
1) The full refurbishment and future-proofing of our church.
2) Services running via Zoom including Sunday services and Friday Compline
3) Running a Parish Foodbank for all to access since March 2020 which is ongoing

We are now preparing for the future of St Leonard’s including the reopening of the church and our new incumbent starting in 2021 when we can start to work towards achieving the goals of our Mission Action Plan.

How far did you meet your previous priorities?
(1 star = Not at all → 10 stars = Done)

4 stars

Where has there been less progress than hoped for?

There has been much less progress across the board due to Coronavirus, a closed Church and our Parish being in Vacancy. Not being able to meet together in person has hindered out ability to be able to focus on Mission also.

Our previous focus has been on Youth Work and the previous incumbent had hoped to be freed up to work more clearly on the mission of the Parish, however, challenges within the parish and a focus on repairing the church building meant that this was not possible.

We focused on reaching younger people in 2019/20 and our Friday “Live at 5” initiative went some way to achieving this goal, although this stopped in March 2020 It has resumed at St John’s Markyate in May 2021 and we hope to replicate this at Flamstead for an older age group.

Vision

What is the vision for your Church, Parish, Team Ministry or Benefice?

We aim to be a Parish Church serving the Spiritual and physical needs of all in the Parish.

We hope that the re-opening of our church in late 2021 with improved, updated facilities and the appointment of our new (and first female) incumbent will begin a new chapter in the history of St Leonard’s which reinvigorates and reinspires the congregation in their own faiths but which also helps us to move forwards to making more of a difference in our local community.

We hope to reach new people and new families who have moved to the village through innovation and improvements in our outreach efforts within the local community.

We hope to celebrate the heritage of our church building and introduce this to a wider audience through our National Lottery Heritage Projects.

We hope that under the guidance of our new incumbent we will work to prayerfully identify opportunities for all ages to be able to engage in religious and outreach opportunities which extend beyond our Sunday Services

Values

What are the core values for your Church, Parish, Team Ministry or Benefice?

To be a church, which cares for the community, is accessible, and where all are welcome and feel at home. We strive to be a forward-thinking church which values, recognises and celebrates the traditional, but also embraces the future and makes strides to bring the church into the 21st century in terms of facilities, preaching, worship and outreach.

1st Priority

What is your 1st Priority to make your vision a reality?

Our first priority is actually getting the church in Flamstead “Back open for Business” both physically in terms of the building once it is available to reopen and Metaphorically in terms of people meeting again in the wake of the Pandemic, and our new incumbent coming on board. We need to let people know that the church is very much alive and well and open to all.

We hope to reach our local community through innovation and improvements in our outreach efforts within the local community.
