St Albans Cathedral Education Centre Hosts First End of Term Retreat Day
17th October 2017
On Friday 7th July, St Albans Cathedral Education Centre hosted its first end of term retreat day for Year Six pupils. The day of activities saw sixty children from Abbots Langley Primary School leave the classroom and follow the route of St Alban and thousands of medieval pilgrims from Roman Verulamium to the Cathedral. Once they reached the Cathedral, the children then visited the shrine of St Alban where they were able to light a candle and begin their day of reflection. Other activities included the creation of a personal identity time capsule which the children personalised with magazine clippings, emojis and more.
Steve Clarke, Cathedral Education Officer, said “The children embraced making the time capsules, they allowed them to reflect on their journey so far and identify personal and shared moments, as well as their feelings about the future. Hopefully they will find their time capsules in a year’s time and be able to consider their first year at secondary school.”
Further opportunities for reflection included a session which introduced the children to mindfulness through the blowing of bubbles at the West End of the Cathedral. The highlight of the day however was the silent disco which gave the children and their teachers an opportunity to go wild in the aisles of the Cathedral.
The Education Centre are already preparing to welcome the next group and look forward to more Year Six Retreat Days in the future.
