St Albans Pre-Lambeth Conference Hospitality Initiative: Can You Help?
4th February 2019
The next Lambeth Conference will take place in Canterbury in the summer of 2020 – this is a ‘once-every-10 years or so’ meeting of all the bishops and their spouses from across the Anglican Communion. It is a unique opportunity in the life of the Church in England to get to meet and know the leaders of other Anglican Church right across the world.
So, before they gather in Canterbury, St Albans Diocese is inviting, hopefully, 22 or 23 bishops and their spouses to spend a week with us. These will include the bishops of our Caribbean Links dioceses but also other from right across the Communion. We already have bishops from the Caribbean, Bangladesh, Canada, Pakistan, Australia and America who have accepted the invitation.
In the invitation Bishop Alan said that we hoped their time with us would “offer a time to relax and refresh themselves prior to the Conference itself; a chance to share a flavour of the life in our diocese; and third, and perhaps for us the most important, to help us to refresh our vision of our involvement in God’s Mission in the diocese.”
The kind of programme that can achieve these will provide a wonderful, even ‘once in a life time’, opportunity to get to know these leaders and their spouses. To do this we need to set up several Task Groups to ensure we plan well and include as many people as possible. The kind of Task Group we will need are:
- Transport – from arrival airport to diocese and oversight of internal transport requirements.
- Research on dioceses of visiting bishops – including diocesan interests and personal ministry passions
- Social Media Watch – what are these bishops saying and can we share some of these thoughts.
- Over-view of the programme – Diocesan events
- Over-view of the programme – Deanery/Archdeaconry events
- Planning group to plan the events – Study Day and Reflection Day
- Coordinating accommodation for the Bishops and spouses
- Finance of the whole programme
- Co-ordination between Deaneries and the overall programme.
- Concern for the spouses and their place in the programme
To get things going we are planning three Information Meetings across the diocese in late February and early March. They will all be the same in content but offer different times and venues possibilities. They will last for no more than 90 minutes They are:
Monday 25th February at 10.30am at Biggleswade – the Church and Chapter House Car Park is accessed from Ivel Gardens which is off Shortmead Street, Biggleswade. [SG18 OAT].
Wednesday 27th February at 7.30pm at the Diocesan Offices, Holywell Hill, St Albans [AL1 1HE] – parking available.
Monday March 4th at 2.30pm at Church House, St. Mary’s Church, Welwyn – The church does not have a car park but there is free on street parking for 90 minutes and several free car parks. [AL6 9LX]
Coming to a meeting will not commit you to anything other than hearing a bit more about this whole venture and the kind of programme that might be planned. But we want as many people as possible to be able to play a part leading up to and in this week in July next year, so do come along and see if its for you.
If you cannot make any of these dates but want to be kept in touch with all the planning or if you have questions prior to the meeting then do contact Stephen Lyon who is coordinating the programme by e-mail (click here).
