Debut for Berkhamsted’s Young Bell Ringers
3rd February 2020
On Christmas Eve the Berkhamsted Youth Bell Ringing Team made their debut when a group of ten young people came together at St Peter’s to ring the church bells for the town’s Christmas crib service.
The group of under 21s, with representatives from Ashlyns, Chesham Grammar, and Berkhamsted School, have been learning the ropes as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, although most have continued to ring well beyond the commitment required by the scheme.
They are believed to be the youngest group ever to ring for a service at St Peter’s in the church’s 800 year history.
Fr Tim Pilkington, the church’s Rector, commented: “It was wonderful to hear the bells ringing out across the town to celebrate Christmas, particularly knowing that, after so many hours of committed practice, it was our brand new young team of campanologists making the joyful sound”.
Anybody, wanting to join the group – whether they have experience of bell ringing or not – should contact the St Peter’s Tower Captain, Mike Below, via the St Peter’s parish office.
